If you’re wondering just how roadie the team at Surly is willing to get, this is it. And it’s notthatroadie if we’re being honest. The Midnight Special is built for day-long rides down roads of worsening and worsening conditions. They bill it as their “road plus” bike as it comes as standard with sturdy 650b wheels allowing up to a 60c tyre (or 42s with a 700c wheel), now that’s a lot of cushion for a road bike. You’ll also notice that the frame looks a bit cleaner than most of their bikes, intentionally foregoing all but the most essential braze-ons for racks, fenders, and water bottles. Because ya know, there are somethings that the Surly crew just isn’t willing to do without. This 2020 version not only lays on a sweet new blue colorway but also moves to Sram’s venerable Rival 1x12 groupset finally vanquishing front derailleurs forever (or until you decide you want to convert back to a double because that’s totally an option).
Why we love it:
Road plus may well be a solid concept for an all-day road rider, but it is borderline sublime for commuters like we love and support here at Bicycle Junction. A slick 650b tyre allows you to roll efficiently while still soaking up heaps of road chatter, meaning a more pleasant pedal up the hill home after a long day at work. Plus with its clean lines we love how handsome these bikes can look whether set up for a daily commute or a day of getting out and exploring New Zealand’s wide open roads.

Though we’re a bike shop that sells, builds and fixes bicycles, they’re really just the means to an end; albeit a beautifully designed means to an idyllic end. Our job most importantly is to encourage as many people as we can to get out and ride for transport and enjoyment. We'd love to make riding a bike as commonplace as your morning cup of coffee, which by the way is our other obsession.
Bicycle Junction is situated at 1 Marion St, Te Aro, Wellington.
