Cargo Tales, Pt. 8: The Velvet Rabbits

April 14, 2021 3 min read

During February, we offered families from five different schools around Wellington the opportunity to take the Yuba Spicy Curry bike home for an extended test ride, to give the cargo lifestyle a go.

We thought it would be fun to share some of the stories that we received from the families who took part. We hope that these may inspire some of you who have been considering making the jump to two wheels to come in and take a bike home for an extended test ride of your own.

Here's a story from 'The Velvet Rabbits' about how they found their time with the Spicy Curry and the fun missions they got on.

In 250 words or less tell us the most important ways riding a cargobike made a positive difference to your family.

The Spicy Curry got us excited about biking around the city. I loved being seen and being part of the Wellington scene/biker community. Having easy access to the city and wearing the thousand Heritage helmet inspired me to rock some frocks and to liberate some dresses in homage to Frocks on Bikes. It was so great being able to get about so quick. I took me 5 minutes to get to Cuba St from home! Loved pumping my legs instead of gasoline. The spicy curry was perfect for checking out the street art of Newtown! Was great swimming and letting the wind dry our hair and seeing the sand just falling off onto the ground, rather than the floor of my car. Haha The bike definitely helped conquer the chaos that is the school pick up. As well as providing a new way to navigate family life. So good not having to sit in traffic and squeeze into tight AF parking spaces. Had a beautiful Sunday morning ride doing the big dipper that is Herald Street quite a few times for giggles. Loved the chats with peeps about the Spicy Curry and what amazing timing to be able to mission with our ebike friends! So good letting the bike dry the kids’ hair after swimming lessons. And I want to say again. . . it really made a real difference to my energy being able to get the kids home straight after school, so we could chill then have more fun. So thanks so much for the boost. Love the Welly bike community & all that open air exercise. The Spicy Curry definitely made my beer taste better. Thanks oh so much. Cheers Esther and the boys.

Tell us a fun story from your time riding the cargobike.

We had heaps of fun getting our dress ups on and doing a dusk tour of the Newtown street art. Was super fun asking roaming locals to take photos of us and I'm pretty impressed with their pictures.

What surprised you the most about riding the cargobike?

I was happily surprised that I still got a really good workout!

In your childrens own words, how do they describe riding the cargobike.

It's fast, it's funny and it's a little bit scarey when you do the quick turns.

Any further comments or feedback regarding the trial?

Thank you so much it was a real blast of joy for us!

Thanks for your story Velvet Rabbits!
