Choosing the right Electric Bike

Start by thinking about how and where you’ll ride most.

  • Look for an upright, comfortable bike with slicker tyres, a rear rack for bags or panniers, and possibly front suspension for comfort.
  • A gravel or hybrid e-bike with wider tyres and light suspension offers versatility and comfort on varied terrain.
  • Consider a bike with a more powerful motor and a larger battery — or even a dual battery setup — to get you further with less effort.
  • Mountain or touring-style e-bikes are built to handle rougher terrain with tougher tyres, stronger gearing, and full suspension options.

🔍 You can use the filters on our shop pages to narrow down bikes by terrain, frame style, and battery size — or come see us in-store for expert advice.

The steeper your commute, the more powerful your motor should be.

If you’re climbing Wellington’s hills daily, we recommend a mid-drive motor — these deliver strong torque and efficiency on inclines.

As for battery:

  • Standard 400–500Wh is fine
  • Go bigger — 625Wh, 725Wh, or even dual-battery setups

Pro tip: No one ever regrets a bigger battery or stronger motor. If in doubt and it's in the budget, go up a level.

Unlike acoustic bikes, e-bikes let you ride in a relaxed, upright position without sacrificing speed. Here’s what to consider:

  • Step-through frames with upright posture feel safe and comfy
  • Sportier positions may feel more natural
  • Look for mid-step or adjustable cockpit bikes

Absolutely. E-bikes make carrying loads easy. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Most regular e-bikes will work — just check if they come with a rear rack or if one can be added.
  • Look at cargo bikes like longtails or front-loaders. We’ll help match you to the right setup.
  • Utility and cargo e-bikes can carry up to 200kg, with add-ons like baskets, child seats, or trailers.
