The Surly Straggler GRX is a steel gravel and adventure bike built for riders who want one bike that can handle commuting, rough sealed roads, gravel rides, weekend touring, and the occasional “let’s see where this goes” turn-off.
It blends road efficiency with real-world durability. Fast enough for everyday riding, stable on rough surfaces, and practical enough to run racks, fenders, and wider tyres without compromise.

This is a proper do-everything setup. The GRX 2 x 12 drivetrain gives you a wide gear range that actually works in New Zealand conditions. You have the low gears for climbs and loaded riding, and enough top end to move efficiently on the road.
The steel frame keeps things calm and predictable on rough surfaces. That matters when you're riding chip seal, gravel paths, or linking surfaces over longer distances.
Riders who want one bike for commuting, gravel riding, bikepacking, and light touring.
It suits Wellington riders who deal with mixed surfaces, rough roads, and changing conditions. Equally at home rolling out to the Hutt, heading over the Remutaka, or just making the daily commute more interesting.
The Straggler is built around practicality. Clearance for 42–50 mm tyres gives you flexibility to tune the ride. Narrower for speed, wider for comfort and control on gravel roads and rougher surfaces.
The inclusion of a dropper post is not common on bikes like this and makes a noticeable difference on descents and loose terrain. It gives you more control when the road turns into something less predictable.
The GRX build is also a step up from older versions. Better braking feel, more refined shifting, and a drivetrain designed specifically for mixed terrain riding.
Smaller sizes 650b wheels come with 47 mm tyres, larger sizes 700c come with 42 mm tyres. This keeps handling consistent across sizes rather than forcing one wheel size to do everything.
This is still a chain-driven bike, so standard drivetrain wear applies over time. Regular cleaning and servicing will keep it running well.
The Surly Straggler GRX is a bike that makes sense if your riding does not fit into one box. It is comfortable, adaptable, and capable across sealed roads, gravel paths, and mixed terrain.
If you want one reliable bike that can commute during the week and head off on longer rides or tours on the weekend, this is exactly what it is built for.
