Ask A Question x

The Cannondale Cargowagen Neo is our new kid on the Bicycle Junction lot. A compact, nimble electric cargo bike for getting kids, groceries, school bags and the rest of life across town without reaching for the car keys every time.

It has the useful bits we look for in a family cargo bike: a powerful Bosch Cargo Line motor for hill support, a low step-through frame for accessibility, small 20" wheels for stability, proper fully powered 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes, an integrated rear rack and a long list of practical parts already fitted. In Wellington terms, that means less wobble setting off loaded at the lights, more help on the way home, and a bike that is not too gigantic to park, store or weave through tight streets.

Why we like it

The Cargowagen Neo sits in a sweet spot between a compact cargo bike like the Tern Quick Haul and a full-size cargo bike. It gives you a long rear deck for up to 2 kids and cargo, but the compact wheel size, short wheelbase and low frame make it much easier to manage in a tight urban environment.

Equipped with the Bosch Cargo Line motor, the Cargowagen feels calm under load, giving strong support at low speeds, hill starts and loaded climbs, especially when you are carrying kids, shopping or both.

The 545 Wh battery gives useful riding margin for daily transport, especially when your trips include hills, wind, higher assist levels or extra weight on the back. Range will still depend on rider, load, terrain, proper tyre pressure and assist mode, but this is well equipped for most Wellington commutes. If you live out in the Hutt or deep in the western suburbs, this bike also has the option for a second battery.

Best for

This is a strong option for families who want one bike to cover school drop-offs, daycare runs, groceries, after-school gear and short-to-medium commutes, or longer commutes with a second battery.

It also suits riders who want cargo-bike usefulness but do not want the length of a front-loader or a longer longtail like the Spicy Curry. The step-through frame, upright position and dropper seatpost make it easier for different riders to share, which matters when the bike becomes part of the household transport system.

What makes it different

The small 20" wheels are a big part of the bike’s usefulness. They help keep the centre of gravity lower, which makes the bike feel more planted when loaded. They also make the rear deck sit lower, which helps with passenger handling and general confidence.

The suspension fork and wide Schwalbe Pick-Up tyres add comfort and control. The tyres are also shop approved for puncture protection.

The Shimano LinkGlide drivetrain is another nice choice. It is built with durability in mind, which makes sense on an e-cargo bike where motor support and extra load can be harder on drivetrain parts over time.

Good to know

The listed 200 kg total capacity and 80 kg rear rack rating are comparable to larger cargo bikes, but the final setup still depends on the passengers, cargo accessories and how the bike is configured. Child seats, cushions, rails, boxes and other accessories do not increase the bike’s weight limit.

The Cargowagen Neo comes well equipped from the start, with a heavy-duty centre stand, sideboards, guards, lights, wheel covers, chain guard and Abus ring lock included. For regular public parking, especially with a bike at this value, we would still recommend adding a serious lock. A frame lock is handy for quick stops, but it is not the whole security plan.

The frame is dual-battery ready, so a second battery can be added for riders who regularly carry heavier loads, ride longer distances or want more margin for hilly commutes. Most riders should start by thinking about their real weekly riding: school distance, commute distance, hills, storage and where the bike will be parked.

Our take

The Cargowagen Neo looks like a very sensible family cargo bike for Wellington. It has the right motor, the right brakes, a stable compact layout and enough included equipment that you are not starting from scratch when looking at accessories. But it is not boring sensible. It handles really well at all speeds, gives off confidence and is lighter than many other compact cargo bikes. You can really feel that when riding. It brakes confidently, with the larger 203 mm rear rotor helping the brake manage heat and maintain consistent power down long descents while fully loaded.

It is best for riders who want a genuine car-replacement tool for school runs, shops, kid hauling and daily transport, but still want something that feels manageable around town. Add the right passenger or cargo setup, add a proper lock, and this could quickly become the most useful vehicle in the house.

How to Choose the Right Cargo Bike

When you chat with us - whether in the shop or online - we’ll
usually start by asking two simple questions:

Where do you ride? Do you tackle a big hill, cruise a long flat commute, or a bit of both?

What do you carry? Is it cargo, kids, or a mix of everything?

Big hills usually mean more power and stronger brakes. Long commutes might call for a high-speed option with a larger battery. Carrying kids or heavier gear means looking at stability and the right accessories.

It can feel overwhelming with so many models out there, but that also means there’s a perfect match for your lifestyle. We’ll help you find it - and you can take an extended test ride to make sure it really fits into your day-to-day.

If you want to explore yourself on our website, go to our cargo bike page and use the filters to narrow down your options based on how you answered the questions above.

Most longtail cargo bikes are set up to carry two kids on the back, like the Tern GSD or Specialized Porto. The popular Yuba Spicy Curry can carry three!

Front-loading cargo bikes can fit two or three passengers up front. Each bike can be customised with heaps of accessories -seats, footrests, baskets, rain covers - so we’ll help match the setup to your crew.

Non-electric cargo bikes are fine for flat, short trips with lighter loads. But if you’ve got hills, longer distances, or wriggly kids on board, an e-cargo bike will change your life. The motor takes the sting out of climbs, makes heavy loads manageable, and opens up bigger commutes without breaking a sweat.

Most e-cargo bikes will happily take you 40–80 km on a single charge. Your range depends on the terrain, assist level, and how much you’re carrying. Some models run dual batteries, which basically doubles your distance - handy for all-day missions.

Absolutely.

Cargo bikes are designed with families in mind. Add the right accessories - child seats, harnesses, rain covers - and they’re one of the safest, comfiest ways to get kids around town.

And the best part? Kids love the ride.

For a lot of families, yes.

Cargo bikes take care of school runs, shopping, work commutes, even weekend adventures. Many of our customers have sold their second cars and never looked back - some have even sold both! You can haul kids, groceries, pets, or gear without the fuel bills or parking headaches. Some households even call the cargo bike their “first car,” keeping the actual car for long trips and holidays.
