Pre-order now: The Tern GSD S10 in Gloss Tabasco is expected around 15 June. Order now to secure one from the incoming shipment.
The Tern GSD S10 is one of our all-time favourite electric cargo bikes, and it has become a favourite with our customers too. A compact electric cargo bike built for families, school runs, shopping, commuting, and the everyday jobs that usually end up needing a car.
It has the carrying ability of a serious cargo bike, but it is not much longer than a regular bike. That matters in Wellington, where tight streets, narrow bike parking, busy school gates, and awkward home storage are part of real life.
With a Bosch Cargo Line motor, 85 Nm of torque, a upgrade to a 500 Wh battery for 2026, and a 200 kg maximum gross vehicle weight, the GSD S10 is made to carry kids and gear without feeling like you are wrestling the bike up every hill.

The GSD S10 has earned its place as one of Wellington’s favourite electric cargo bikes because it solves a very real problem: how to carry children, bags, groceries, and everyday life without needing a full-sized car for every trip.
The Bosch Cargo Line motor is the right kind of motor for this job. With 85 Nm of torque, it gives strong support on Wellington hills, especially when the bike is loaded with kids or cargo. That makes a big difference if your route includes places like Brooklyn, Karori, Kelburn, Wadestown, or the western suburbs.
The supplied 500 Wh battery is a practical size for everyday family riding, school runs, errands, and many Wellington commutes. The GSD S10 also uses Bosch’s dual-battery system, giving you the option to expand capacity later if your riding grows into longer distances, heavier loads, or more high-assist hill work.
The compact format is just as important as the motor. The GSD can carry a serious load, but it does not ride or store like a huge cargo bike. It is easier to manage around town, easier to park, and easier to fit into tighter home storage than many long front-loader style cargo bikes.
The Tern GSD S10 is best for families who want one bike to handle a lot of daily life. It suits school drop-offs, daycare runs, supermarket trips, commuting, weekend errands, and carrying two children with the right accessory setup.
It is also a strong option for households looking to reduce car use rather than simply add another bike to the garage. For many Wellington families, the GSD works well as the practical middle ground between a normal e-bike and a larger cargo bike.
If you live in the Hutt Valley and ride into town, the 500 Wh battery gives a stronger starting point than smaller-capacity e-bikes, while the dual-battery capability gives room to build the bike around longer commutes or regular high-assist riding.
The GSD S10 is not just a normal e-bike with a big rack. It is built around cargo use from the start.
The 200 kg maximum gross vehicle weight gives it the structure needed for real family loads. The heavy-duty frame-integrated rear rack is rated to 100 kg, while the lower decks help support cargo and passenger setups properly. The result is a bike that feels settled when carrying people and gear, rather than improvised.
The Atlas Lockstand is a major practical detail. A stable stand matters when you are loading kids, bags, or groceries. It makes the bike easier to manage at school gates, outside the supermarket, or in a driveway when everyone is moving at once.
The Magura MT5 eSTOP 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes are another key part of the package. A cargo bike needs strong, controlled braking because it is often carrying more than just the rider. This is especially important in Wellington, where descents, wet roads, and stop-start traffic are normal.
The Suntour custom suspension fork adds comfort and control over rough roads, broken seal, kerbs, and everyday city bumps. Paired with the wide Schwalbe Big Ben Plus front tyre and Super Moto-X rear tyre, the GSD S10 is built to feel stable and comfortable under load.
Tern’s accessory system is a big reason people choose the GSD. Child seats, passenger kits, weather protection, panniers, seatpads, and cargo hauling accessories let the bike change as your family changes. It can start as a daycare bike, become a school-run bike, then keep working as a shopping and commuting bike later on.
The Shimano Deore 1 x 10-speed derailleur drivetrain gives a useful gear range and is straightforward to service. Like any chain drivetrain, it will need regular cleaning and replacement over time, especially with daily riding, wet weather, and coastal conditions.
The integrated Abus wheel lock is keyed alike with the Bosch battery, which keeps day-to-day locking simpler. For longer stops, a proper external lock is still recommended.
The GSD S10 has a folding cockpit for easier storage and transport. It is not a folding bike in the traditional sense, but the handlepost setup helps reduce its footprint when storing it at home, in a garage, or in a tighter shared space.
If your riding is mostly very long distance, high assist, heavy loads, and regular Hutt Valley or hill-suburb commuting, talk to us about battery setup before choosing. The supplied 500 Wh battery is perfect for many daily trips, but some riders will be better served by adding a second battery.
If you regularly need to carry three children, a larger cargo bike or a different longtail may be a better fit. The GSD is excellent for two-child family transport with the right accessories.
The Tern GSD S10 is one of the most useful electric cargo bikes for Wellington families because it gets the balance right. It carries kids and cargo properly, has the Bosch power needed for hills, and stays compact enough for real city living.
Choose it if you want a proven, serviceable electric cargo bike that can take over school runs, shopping, commuting, and everyday family logistics without feeling like you have brought home a small truck.

When you chat with us - whether in the shop or online - we’ll
usually start by asking two simple questions:
Where do you ride? Do you tackle a big hill, cruise a long flat commute, or a bit of both?
What do you carry? Is it cargo, kids, or a mix of everything?
Big hills usually mean more power and stronger brakes. Long commutes might call for a high-speed option with a larger battery. Carrying kids or heavier gear means looking at stability and the right accessories.
It can feel overwhelming with so many models out there, but that also means there’s a perfect match for your lifestyle. We’ll help you find it - and you can take an extended test ride to make sure it really fits into your day-to-day.
If you want to explore yourself on our website, go to our cargo bike page and use the filters to narrow down your options based on how you answered the questions above.
Most longtail cargo bikes are set up to carry two kids on the back, like the Tern GSD or Specialized Porto. The popular Yuba Spicy Curry can carry three!
Front-loading cargo bikes can fit two or three passengers up front. Each bike can be customised with heaps of accessories -seats, footrests, baskets, rain covers - so we’ll help match the setup to your crew.
Non-electric cargo bikes are fine for flat, short trips with lighter loads. But if you’ve got hills, longer distances, or wriggly kids on board, an e-cargo bike will change your life. The motor takes the sting out of climbs, makes heavy loads manageable, and opens up bigger commutes without breaking a sweat.
Most e-cargo bikes will happily take you 40–80 km on a single charge. Your range depends on the terrain, assist level, and how much you’re carrying. Some models run dual batteries, which basically doubles your distance - handy for all-day missions.
Absolutely.
Cargo bikes are designed with families in mind. Add the right accessories - child seats, harnesses, rain covers - and they’re one of the safest, comfiest ways to get kids around town.
And the best part? Kids love the ride.
For a lot of families, yes.
Cargo bikes take care of school runs, shopping, work commutes, even weekend adventures. Many of our customers have sold their second cars and never looked back - some have even sold both! You can haul kids, groceries, pets, or gear without the fuel bills or parking headaches. Some households even call the cargo bike their “first car,” keeping the actual car for long trips and holidays.
A good test ride is the most important factor when it comes to finding the right bike.
Available for Electric Bikes only and subject to availability.
