The Carrie solves a very specific problem: how do you carry children, shopping or bulky everyday cargo when you do not have the space for a large cargo bike?
At just over two metres long, it is much easier to store and manoeuvre than many full-size cargo bikes. That matters in Wellington, where garages are rare, bike parking can be tight, and a lot of homes have awkward access.
The Flex Box is the key feature here. Folded in, it keeps the bike narrow and manageable. Folded out, it gives you a much larger front loading area for kids, groceries, bags or family gear. With the child seat and rain cover fitted, this configuration is set up for practical family transport straight away.
The Carrie vario is best for riders who want a compact electric cargo bike for everyday transport rather than a huge family hauler. It makes sense for one to two-child school runs, city errands, daycare drop-offs, groceries, library trips and short-to-medium commutes around Wellington.
The Bosch Performance Line motor is a strong match for urban riding. It gives smooth support for stop-start traffic, rolling suburbs and regular hills. The 545 Wh battery suits most Wellington daily use, especially for riders doing typical city trips and long-distance commuting from the Petone or Westen suburbs every day.
The 20 inch wheels keep the load low and the bike feeling planted. That helps when you are carrying a child up front, riding through wind, or threading through tight streets and bike parking.
The Carrie is not trying to be the biggest cargo bike. It is trying to be the cargo bike that fits into normal city life.
The front Flex Box gives it more carrying ability than a standard e-bike, while the compact frame keeps it far easier to live with than many long cargo bikes. For Wellington riders, that balance is important. A bike that is easy to park, store and handle is a bike that gets used more often.
The Enviolo hub gear is also a good fit for cargo riding. Instead of clicking between fixed gears, you twist the shifter to adjust the resistance smoothly. That is handy when you are slowing down for intersections, restarting on a hill, or riding with a child and cargo on board.
The Gates CDX belt drive reduces drivetrain wear compared with a standard chain. It is a sensible choice for Wellington’s coastal conditions, wet roads and regular year-round use. A belt doesn't need to be lubricated! Brakes, tyres and general servicing still matter, but the belt and hub setup is built for long-term low maintenance daily ownership.
This configuration uses the 545 Wh Bosch battery. For most everyday Wellington riding, that is a practical size. Range will still depend on rider weight, assist level, terrain, wind and how much cargo you are carrying.
The bike is rated to a 200 kg gross vehicle weight. That includes the bike, rider, child, cargo and accessories. The maximum rider weight is 110 kg.
The Riese & Müller Carrie vario is a smart compact cargo bike for riders who want useful carrying capacity without committing to a huge bike. It is especially strong for Wellington families and city riders who need a bike for children, shopping and everyday transport.
Choose it if you want a compact, stable and highly practical electric cargo bike that can handle real daily life, while still fitting into tight streets, small storage spaces and the rhythm of city riding.
