The Riese & Müller Carrie2 vario is a compact electric cargo bike for young families, daily errands and anyone who needs useful carrying space without committing to a full-length cargo ship.
At only 2m long, it is much easier to park and store than many front-loaders, but still gives you a front cargo box for school bags, groceries, kids and the usual small chaos of daily life. This configuration adds the 725 Wh battery, Kiox 300 display, suspension seatpost and Family kit, so it is set up with Wellington hills, wind and child-carrying duties in mind.

The Carrie2 makes a lot of sense for Wellington because it keeps the useful part of a cargo bike, the front box, while staying short enough for tight streets, awkward parking spots and small storage spaces. It is the cargo bike for people who want the capability, but do not want to feel like they are piloting a ferry down Cuba Street.
The Bosch Performance Line PX motor gives strong hill support for loaded riding, while the 725 Wh battery adds extra riding margin for longer commutes, headwinds, higher assist use and carrying kids or cargo. Range will still depend on rider, load, assist level, terrain, wind, tyre choice and tyre pressure, but this is the battery option we would want if the bike is doing proper daily work.
The Enviolo hub and Gates CDX belt are the right match for an everyday cargo bike. You get simple twist-shift gearing, a clean belt drive and reduced drivetrain wear compared with a chain. Brakes, tyres and regular servicing still matter, because cargo bikes work hard, but this setup makes day-to-day ownership easier.
The Carrie2 can carry up to two children up to the age of seven, depending on setup and local child-carrying rules. As always with cargo bikes, the real limit is set by the bike, the accessory setup and the total load, not just by what physically fits in the box.
The integrated ABUS lock is useful for quick stops, but a bike at this value deserves a serious second lock for longer public parking. Think good D-lock or chain, good lighting, and somewhere with line of sight. Make the bike annoying to steal. That is the whole game.
At around 35.7 kg before optional accessories, this is still a proper cargo e-bike. It rides compact, but it is not a bike you want to carry up stairs every day.
Choose a larger front-loader if you regularly need to carry older kids, bulkier loads or bigger family cargo. Choose a longtail if you want passengers behind you and a narrower front end. Choose the Carrie2 if compact storage, front-box access and city handling matter more than maximum load space.
The Carrie2 vario is one of the more sensible ways into a proper family cargo bike if space is tight. It is not trying to be the biggest hauler in the room. It is trying to be the one you actually use every day, for school bags, groceries, small passengers, Wellington hills and the sort of errands that quietly replace car trips.
When you chat with us - whether in the shop or online - we’ll
usually start by asking two simple questions:
Where do you ride? Do you tackle a big hill, cruise a long flat commute, or a bit of both?
What do you carry? Is it cargo, kids, or a mix of everything?
Big hills usually mean more power and stronger brakes. Long commutes might call for a high-speed option with a larger battery. Carrying kids or heavier gear means looking at stability and the right accessories.
It can feel overwhelming with so many models out there, but that also means there’s a perfect match for your lifestyle. We’ll help you find it - and you can take an extended test ride to make sure it really fits into your day-to-day.
If you want to explore yourself on our website, go to our cargo bike page and use the filters to narrow down your options based on how you answered the questions above.
Most longtail cargo bikes are set up to carry two kids on the back, like the Tern GSD or Specialized Porto. The popular Yuba Spicy Curry can carry three!
Front-loading cargo bikes can fit two or three passengers up front. Each bike can be customised with heaps of accessories -seats, footrests, baskets, rain covers - so we’ll help match the setup to your crew.
Non-electric cargo bikes are fine for flat, short trips with lighter loads. But if you’ve got hills, longer distances, or wriggly kids on board, an e-cargo bike will change your life. The motor takes the sting out of climbs, makes heavy loads manageable, and opens up bigger commutes without breaking a sweat.
Most e-cargo bikes will happily take you 40–80 km on a single charge. Your range depends on the terrain, assist level, and how much you’re carrying. Some models run dual batteries, which basically doubles your distance - handy for all-day missions.
Absolutely.
Cargo bikes are designed with families in mind. Add the right accessories - child seats, harnesses, rain covers - and they’re one of the safest, comfiest ways to get kids around town.
And the best part? Kids love the ride.
For a lot of families, yes.
Cargo bikes take care of school runs, shopping, work commutes, even weekend adventures. Many of our customers have sold their second cars and never looked back - some have even sold both! You can haul kids, groceries, pets, or gear without the fuel bills or parking headaches. Some households even call the cargo bike their “first car,” keeping the actual car for long trips and holidays.
A good test ride is the most important factor when it comes to finding the right bike.
