The ABUS Granit 460 is a keyed D-lock for everyday bike security. It is a good step up from a cable lock or light chain, giving stronger protection in a tidy format that can be carried on the bike.

With an ABUS level 9 security rating, a 12 mm hardened steel shackle and a USH frame mount included, it suits commuter bikes, town bikes and many regular e-bike setups where you want a practical main lock for day-to-day parking.

Why we like it

The Granit 460 is a useful lock because it takes you into proper D-lock territory without becoming too bulky for everyday use. It is stronger than a cable lock, easier to carry than a heavy chain, and compact enough to bring with you on regular rides.

The 12 mm hardened steel shackle gives good resistance for everyday town parking, while the double-locking mechanism secures both ends of the shackle in the lock body. The included USH frame mount makes it easier to carry the lock on the bike rather than throwing it in a bag.

Best for

  • Commuter bikes and everyday town bikes
  • Riders upgrading from a cable lock or light chain
  • Regular parking at shops, work, cafés and bike racks
  • Proper fixed locking points where a D-lock can reach cleanly
  • Using as a main lock, or with a cable to secure a wheel or accessory

What makes it different

The Granit 460 sits between compact lighter locks like the ABUS Ultra Mini 410 and higher-security options like the ABUS Granit XPlus 540. It gives a stronger everyday lock setup than the smaller basic D-locks, while staying more accessible than the top-level models.

Compared with a folding lock or chain, the Granit 460 is more limited in reach. That is the main D-lock trade-off. It works best when the bike frame can sit close to a proper rack or fixed point. If you often lock to awkward poles, crowded racks or larger cargo bike setups, a folding lock or chain may be easier to use.

Good to know

For the best result, lock the frame to something fixed and keep the lock snug. Less empty space inside the shackle makes it harder for tools to get leverage.

For higher-value e-bikes, cargo bikes, overnight parking or higher-risk areas, we would look at a higher-rated lock such as the ABUS Granit XPlus 540, a Bordo Granit 6500K, a high-rated chain, or a two-lock setup.

If you want to secure a front wheel, helmet or accessory as well, pair the Granit 460 with a loop cable or a second lock. The D-lock should protect the frame first.

Final word

The ABUS Granit 460 is a strong everyday D-lock for riders who want better security than a cable or light lock, without moving all the way to a top-level lock. Choose it for commuting, town riding and regular bike parking where a compact D-lock fits the way you ride.
