The ABUS Steel-O-Chain 4804K is a basic keyed chain lock for low-risk bike parking. It is a good step up from a simple cable lock if you want something more practical for locking around racks, posts or awkward bike stands.
This is best suited to kids’ bikes, lower-value town bikes, quick stops and places where theft risk is low. It is not the lock we would choose for an e-bike, cargo bike, high-value commuter or any bike being left outside for long periods.
Product type: Keyed chain lock
Best use: Kids’ bikes, lower-value bikes, quick stops and low-risk parking
Security rating: ABUS level 4 out of 15
Chain: 4 mm square chain
Locking type: Key
Good to know: Clicks shut without needing the key inserted
Security note: Basic protection only, not for higher-value bikes or long-term outdoor parking
The 4804K is simple and easy to use. The chain gives you more flexibility than a short D-lock, which helps when the bike rack is busy or the locking point is an awkward shape.
The textile sleeve helps protect the bike’s paint, and the automatic cylinder means you can click the lock shut without having to put the key in first. That makes it easier for kids, families or anyone who just wants a quick lock for short stops.
This is a basic security lock. If you are locking a valuable bike, especially an e-bike or cargo bike, choose a stronger lock with a higher ABUS security rating. For higher-risk areas, longer stops, or overnight parking, we would look at a stronger chain, folding lock, D-lock, or a two-lock setup.
As with any lock, where you park matters. Use a fixed locking point, keep the bike in a visible and well-lit place, and lock the frame rather than just the wheel.
The ABUS Steel-O-Chain 4804K is a useful basic chain lock for simple, low-risk jobs. Choose it for kids’ bikes, cheaper runabouts and short stops. Choose something stronger if the bike is valuable or parked outside for long periods.
A good test ride is the most important factor when it comes to finding the right bike.
