What it’s built for:
The Karate Monkey is Surly’s dedicated mountain bike, built to tackle the nastiest terrain you can throw at a steel hardtail. Originally conceived as a 29er (in fact it was one of the bikes that helped kickoff the 29” revolution way back when), these days it’s been updated for modern riding and comes built with ultra-grippy 27.5+ tires to keep you comfortable and ripping no matter what the trail sends your way. But it’s no one trick pony, the Karate Monkey comes with plenty of braze-ons to get outfitted for your next dirt-centric bikepacking escapade.
Why we love it:
This is a mountain bike done the Surly way. First and foremost it’s rugged, sensible, and wildly capable, but it’s also extraordinarily versatile. While Surly tends to steer clear or fickle things like suspension forks and dropper seatposts that many manufacturers chase, they go for quality where it counts like with their cush-riding mid-fat tyres, and refined geometry. The Monkey’s equally up for your next big bikepack as it is for a day up at Makara Peak.
