Choosing the right cargo bike is a big decision. While we’ve got the team and experience to steer you towards the right set of wheels, doing a bit of DYOR (do your own research) never hurt anyone, especially when it comes to a big-ticket item like this.
On paper, you'll see these bikes are very similar in the key specifications, and what we often find is that the decision comes down to the ride feel. In this blog, we’ll share what they’re built for and what we love about them. If one, or more, resonate with you, then the next step will be booking a test ride. So, saddle up as we dive deep into our most popular long-tail cargo bikes.

The Longtail Cargo Bike: What are they built for?
Designed to replace your car, these cargo bikes are built to carry at least two kiddos and groceries or a large haul of cargo, all supported by a generous 200kg gross weight rating. They employ the most powerful motors with at least a hill-busting 85 Nm of torque. Oversized front racks can hold everything you need. All models have integrated lights and fenders. You’ll also notice these bikes utilise a smaller 20” wheel either in the rear or at both ends. This helps bring down the center of balance of the bike, improving stability when loaded up. Another benefit of the smaller wheel is a lower step-over when mounting the bike, and the ability to quickly adjust seat height and steering positions for varying rider heights.
Stable, functional, and flexible - the GSD is Tern’s flagship cargo bike. With 20” wheels front and rear the GSD is extremely stable when loaded up. And being one of the few longtails with front suspension it rides like a dream as well. A favourite feature of ours is the huge front rack complimented with the Tern WeatherTop Carryall bag—especially handy for storing school bags and the likes when shuttling your kids to school, no matter the weather. Need to go the distance? Easily fit a second battery. Tight on space? The handlebars fold flat and, the bike can stand vertically! Consider the massive range of accessories and you have yourself a well-rounded trailblazer that sets the standard for cargo bikes.
The Spicy Curry is Yuba's full-blown electric longtail cargo bike. The Spicy sets itself apart in two ways. First, it has the longest tail of the bunch, making loading up the rear of the bike with up to three kiddos and groceries a snap. With the rear end beautifully crafted around the smaller 20" wheel, it completes the package with a natural-riding 26" front wheel, making this one of the most comfortable and confidence inspiring rides.
The Spicy has been a bit of a shop celebrity at Bicycle Junction for a while now. As our shop bike, it has hauled all kinds of cargo all over Wellington, even going so far as to tow a trailer for a truly ludicrous amount of cargo capacity. We love this bike for its combination of a low center of gravity, natural ride feel, powerful motor, and huge suite of Yuba accessories that make it one of the most versatile longtails on the street. It's also the only three kid capable longtail.
Specialized has entered the game with their first longtail cargo bike—and they’re not messing around. Designed for the family, the Porto can haul up to two kids with ease. The wide 2.8-inch tires give this longtail cargo bike a supportive and cushioned ride despite not having suspension. It stands out with 90 Nm of torque and a 710-watt battery, making it the most powerful e-bike in the cargo category. The decision to forgo the traditional chain and derailleur for the extremely durable Gates belt and Enviolo Gear Hub is a big tick from us—this also makes it the quietest of the bunch. If you’re looking to save big on maintenance costs, this is an excellent option.
German engineering at its finest. This well-rounded, beautifully crafted cargo bike is the crème de la crème of the crop. Consider the Multitinker in the realm of the GSD, with a belt drive and larger capacity battery. The premium you pay upfront will pay off in the long run, similar to the Porto. Whereas you’ll need to replace your traditional drivetrain every 3,000 km or, you can get around 10,000 km out of the Belt and much further out of the Enviolo system. Another feature we love is the lockable glove box!
The most affordable of the bunch at the base model, the Lundi can be upgraded to a belt drive Enviolo system and harbour two batteries for those bigger commutes. A feature we love is the dropper seat post, which means you can quickly raise and lower the seat height—great for when you stop at lights and want both feet firmly planted on the ground. Similar in format to the GSD but considerably lighter, this bike is definitely worth a try. Looks sure do hit the mark too!

Future proofing
Another point to consider is future proofing. While the compact long tails such as GSD and Lundi are great for two smaller children, if you want to shuttle them as they get older—say up to 12—then you might consider a full size longtail such as the Spicy Curry. Not a concern if your kids are still under 5 but if they're 6-8 they will fit well now but, perhaps not in a few years.
Longtail cargo bikes for businesses
Can’t afford to be slowed down? Longtail cargo bikes are perfect for businesses offering services around town or simply needing to shuttle goods. With powerful motors and large battery capacities, you’ll hit those delivery targets even during peak hour.
