Choosing an adventure bike is a bit like choosing a good pair of boots. On paper they can look very similar - same materials, similar features - yet once you start digging into the details, the differences begin to show.
That’s exactly the case with the Surly Midnight Special Carbon and the Marin Nicasio 3.
At a glance both bikes tick many of the same boxes:
Yet one costs $3,299, while the other sits at $5,999.
In this blog we’ll break down where the differences actually lie and what each bike is designed to do best. If one of them resonates with you, the next step is simple - swing by the shop and take one for a ride.
Both bikes use chromoly steel, but the way that steel is used is quite different.
The Midnight Special uses 4130 Chromoly steel with Surly’s Natch tubing and a double-butted main triangle.
4130 is a high-strength alloy commonly used in performance steel frames. Because the material is strong, frame builders can use thinner butted tubing - thicker at the joints for strength and thinner through the middle to save weight and engineer in flex and responsiveness to create a more lively and comfortable ride feel.
Surly also internally coats the frame to protect against corrosion. The result is a frame that’s durable, lively, and comfortable when handling big miles over rough roads.
The Nicasio uses Marin’s SteezyR CrMo steel. “CrMo” simply refers to chromium-molybdenum steel, a similar alloy family to 4130, but the tubing is typically produced with slightly thicker wall profiles to keep manufacturing efficient and affordable albeit a little bit stiffer.
Both frames ride beautifully. The Surly simply uses more refined tubing shaping and butting, which gives Surly greater control over the ride feel.
This is where the bikes begin to separate in terms of how and where they can ride.
The Nicasio runs a 1x gravel drivetrain:
1x systems are fantastic for gravel riding because they’re simple, reliable, and easy to maintain. With a narrow-wide chainring and a clutched derailleur you'll be less likely to drop a chain on rough terrain.
For us though, the 11-42 cassette is a bit of a weak point. With the large 42T chainring the bike is going to struggle up steeper climbs, especially when loaded for bikepacking or touring. You could drop to a 38T or 40T chainring, but then you risk spinning out around 30 km/h on the road.
The Midnight Special runs a 2x Shimano 105 12-speed drivetrain:
The big advantage of a 2x drivetrain is range and efficiency. You get smaller jumps between gears and higher top speeds on the road. Both bikes offer the same climbing gear.
What this means in the real world is that the Midnight Special can comfortably keep pace on fast open roads while still offering low gearing for climbing gravel roads or loaded touring.
In many ways the Midnight Special is two bikes in one - part endurance road bike and part gravel machine.
Another handy feature of the Midnight Special is its versatility when it comes to tyres.
The frame can run:
That means you can set the bike up in two very different ways:
The Marin Nicasio 3 also handles wider tyres nicely. It comes stock with 45mm Maxxis Reavers, making it a very capable gravel and adventure bike straight out of the box. The Surly simply pushes that versatility a little further.
Both bikes feature carbon rims, but the hubs and build quality make a significant difference.
DT Swiss 350 hubs are widely regarded as one of the best hub platforms available. They use the DT Swiss ratchet system, known for durability, smooth engagement, and long service life. These hubs are commonly found in high-end custom wheel builds.
Novatec hubs are reliable and widely used on mid-range wheelsets. They perform well and keep the cost of the bike much lower, but they do not quite reach the long-term durability and serviceability of the DT Swiss system.
The Surly wheelset is closer to a premium custom build, while the Marin focuses on delivering carbon wheels at a very accessible price.
When you look closely, the finishing kit also reflects the different positioning of the bikes.
Surly Midnight Special
Marin Nicasio 3
Both are perfectly functional setups, but the Surly includes more premium finishing details across the build.
The difference isn’t just one part. It is the combination of upgrades across the bike.
The Midnight Special includes:
The Nicasio focuses on excellent value and simplicity, while the Surly leans into performance and versatility.

The next best way to understand the difference between these bikes is to ride them back to back. Swing by Bicycle Junction, we’ll get you out for a spin.
Once you feel the difference in gearing, ride feel, and handling, the decision usually becomes pretty clear.
