Abus Cobra Cable

Ask A Question x

The ABUS Cobra Cable is a loop-ended security cable for adding reach to your main lock setup. It is useful for securing wheels, helmets, saddles, trailers, child seats, bikepacking gear, or linking several bikes together when a standard lock will not reach far enough.

This is not a standalone bike lock. It is designed to work with a D-lock, frame lock, padlock, chain lock, folding lock or another hardened main lock. Think of it as the extra reach that helps your main lock do more.

Product type: Loop-ended security cable

Best use: Wheels, helmets, saddles, child seats, trailers, accessories, car racks and extra gear

Use with: D-locks, frame locks, padlocks, folding locks, chain locks and other hardened main locks

Length options: 200 cm and 500 cm

Construction: Steel cable with loop ends

Good to know: Adds reach and accessory security, but should not replace a proper main bike lock

Why we like it

The Cobra Cable solves the problem most compact locks have: they secure the frame well, but do not always reach a front wheel, helmet, child seat, trailer, second bike or awkward bit of gear.

The loop ends make it simple to pair with a stronger lock. Pass the cable through the items you want to secure, then capture the loop with your D-lock, frame lock, padlock, chain lock or folding lock. The coating helps protect bike paint and gear from scratches while you use it.

It is especially useful when you need more length rather than more lock bulk. That might be a few bikes on a car rack, several kids’ bikes in the garage, or loose gear outside a café while you stop for coffee.

Best for

  • Securing a front wheel with your main lock
  • Adding light security for helmets, saddles or child seats
  • Locking trailers, prams or cargo accessories during short stops
  • Bikepacking bags and loose gear outside cafés or campsites
  • Adding reach when your main lock does not quite get around everything
  • Threading through several bikes on a car rack during travel stops
  • Vertical hitch racks carrying three, four or five bikes where a standard lock will not reach far enough
  • Garages, sheds and shared storage areas where you want to link several kids’ bikes or lower-value bikes together

Good to know

A loop cable is a support piece, not the main security for the bike. Cable locks are flexible and useful, but they are much easier to cut than a proper D-lock, folding lock or chain. Use the Cobra Cable to secure accessories, link multiple bikes together, or add reach to a stronger lock, not as the only thing protecting a valuable bike.

It is a handy option when travelling with bikes on a car rack. If you are stopping for coffee, food or fuel, the Cobra Cable can be threaded through several bikes on the rack and then paired with a small hardened D-lock, combination U-lock, padlock or another proper lock. It will not make the bikes theft-proof, but it adds a useful deterrent for short, visible stops.

For garages and sheds, the longer cable option can help link several kids’ bikes or lower-value bikes together, especially where a normal D-lock does not have enough reach. For valuable bikes, e-bikes or cargo bikes, start with a strong main lock first, then use the Cobra Cable for extra reach or accessory security.

Good pairing options include the ABUS Ultra Mini 410, the ULAC Soloist U-Lock, or any suitable hardened lock that can capture the cable loop securely.

Final word

The ABUS Cobra Cable is a practical add-on for riders who need more reach from their lock setup. Choose it for wheels, helmets, trailers, accessories, bikes on vertical car racks, or linking several lower-value bikes together in a garage. Use it with a proper D-lock, folding lock, chain lock or hardened lock, not as the main lock for a valuable bike.
