Ask A Question x

The Spicy Curry has long been one of the heroes of our cargo bike range, right alongside the Tern GSD. The V4 is the latest version, bringing the same proven longtail idea into a more refined package with Bosch Smart System, front suspension, an integrated battery, cargo-specific tyres and Yuba’s updated Stay Steady Technology frame design.

A good family cargo bike needs to climb well, brake well, feel stable when loaded, handle tight streets and carry the daily chaos without turning every ride into a logistics meeting. The Spicy Curry V4 is built for exactly that.

Bike type Electric longtail cargo bike

Best use Family transport, school runs, groceries, business use, dogs and trailer towing

Motor Bosch Cargo Line, 85 Nm, Smart System

Passengers 1 to 3 passengers, depending on setup

Max load 200 kg including rider

Why we like it

The Spicy Curry range at its core has earned its place in Wellington. It is a proper longtail cargo bike that still feels natural to ride, even when the back is loaded with kids, bags, groceries or something awkward from the hardware store.

The addition of front suspension on the V4 and an improved steering dampener is something you can really notice. The bike feels more composed at higher speeds and smooths the roughest roads likes it's no ones business.

The low 20" rear wheel keeps the load closer to the ground, which helps the bike feel stable with passengers or cargo on board. The 26" front wheel gives it a familiar steering feel.

The Bosch Cargo Line Smart System motor gives more refined support at lower speeds, offering instant support on hills and at greens lights when fully loaded.

The Spicy Curry V4 backs up the Bosch motor with Magura MT Thirty hydraulic disc brakes, with a 4-piston front brake and 2-piston rear brake for confident stopping power when the bike is loaded.

Best for

This is a great option for families who want one bike to handle the school run, daycare drop-off, supermarket missions and weekend wandering. It has room for kids, cargo, dogs, trailers and the general logistics of everyday life, while still feeling like something you can happily ride every day.

It is the kind of cargo bike that can grow with the family, backed by the long-term parts and service support of the Bosch motor system.

What’s different from the Spicy Curry CLS?

The V4 is the latest version of the Spicy Curry, and the higher price comes from a more modern overall package rather than one single headline part.

Refined geometry. The V4 is slightly shorter overall than the CLS, with a shorter reach to the handlebar. That helps in two useful ways. First, it puts the rider in a more confident position over the front of the bike, which helps the steering feel more responsive and assured. Second, it makes the bike more manageable for shorter riders, which matters on a shared family cargo bike.

The biggest change is the move to Bosch Smart System. The older CLS was a non-Smart System bike. The V4 keeps the Bosch Cargo Line motor support that made the Spicy Curry such a good loaded climber, but adds the newer Bosch ecosystem for app connection, updates and long-term platform support.

The V4 also adds front suspension, which makes a real difference on rough streets, raised crossings, driveway lips, potholes and all the little hits that become more noticeable when you are riding with passengers or cargo.

The integrated 500 Wh battery gives the frame a cleaner and more modern layout, while the updated Stay Steady Technology frame design is built around loaded stability, lateral stiffness and predictable handling.

The Schwalbe Pick-Up tyres are cargo-specific, so they are a better match for loaded everyday riding than a general urban tyre. The Microshift Advent 9-speed drivetrain keeps things simple and practical, with a useful range for commuting, school runs and loaded city riding.

The V3 was already a very good cargo bike. The V4 is not trying to reinvent it. It takes the same Spicy Curry idea and brings it up to date with a more comfortable, more integrated and more modern cargo-bike platform. It also comes with a host of updated accessories.

Good to know

The 500 Wh battery gives useful daily riding margin for school runs, errands and loaded trips around town. Range will depend on rider, load, hills, wind, assist level, tyre pressure and how much snack cargo is on board, but the Bosch Cargo Line system is well suited to the stop-start reality of cargo riding.

Passenger and cargo setups are where this bike really comes alive. Child seats, monkey bars, footrests, baskets, bags and trailer options can all change how the bike works for your household or business. We can help set it up properly rather than leaving you to guess from a wall of accessories.

Choose this if

Choose the Spicy Curry V4 if you want the latest version of Yuba’s proven longtail cargo bike, with strong hill support, a modern Bosch system, front suspension and room to grow with your family or daily load.

Choose a Tern GSD if compact storage and a shorter overall bike length matter more. Choose a front-loader if you want the cargo or kids in front of you rather than behind you.

Our take

The Yuba Spicy Curry V4 makes a lot of sense for Wellington. It has the low-load stability, hill support, braking control and carrying capacity that made earlier Spicy Currys such a strong family and business option, but now with the comfort and system updates we expect from a modern cargo bike.

It is not the cheapest way into cargo biking, and the older CLS still deserves respect. But if you want the newest Spicy Curry platform, the V4 gives you the cleaner frame, Bosch Smart System, front suspension and cargo-specific build that make the extra spend easier to understand.

How to Choose the Right Cargo Bike

When you chat with us - whether in the shop or online - we’ll
usually start by asking two simple questions:

Where do you ride? Do you tackle a big hill, cruise a long flat commute, or a bit of both?

What do you carry? Is it cargo, kids, or a mix of everything?

Big hills usually mean more power and stronger brakes. Long commutes might call for a high-speed option with a larger battery. Carrying kids or heavier gear means looking at stability and the right accessories.

It can feel overwhelming with so many models out there, but that also means there’s a perfect match for your lifestyle. We’ll help you find it - and you can take an extended test ride to make sure it really fits into your day-to-day.

If you want to explore yourself on our website, go to our cargo bike page and use the filters to narrow down your options based on how you answered the questions above.

Most longtail cargo bikes are set up to carry two kids on the back, like the Tern GSD or Specialized Porto. The popular Yuba Spicy Curry can carry three!

Front-loading cargo bikes can fit two or three passengers up front. Each bike can be customised with heaps of accessories -seats, footrests, baskets, rain covers - so we’ll help match the setup to your crew.

Non-electric cargo bikes are fine for flat, short trips with lighter loads. But if you’ve got hills, longer distances, or wriggly kids on board, an e-cargo bike will change your life. The motor takes the sting out of climbs, makes heavy loads manageable, and opens up bigger commutes without breaking a sweat.

Most e-cargo bikes will happily take you 40–80 km on a single charge. Your range depends on the terrain, assist level, and how much you’re carrying. Some models run dual batteries, which basically doubles your distance - handy for all-day missions.

Absolutely.

Cargo bikes are designed with families in mind. Add the right accessories - child seats, harnesses, rain covers - and they’re one of the safest, comfiest ways to get kids around town.

And the best part? Kids love the ride.

For a lot of families, yes.

Cargo bikes take care of school runs, shopping, work commutes, even weekend adventures. Many of our customers have sold their second cars and never looked back - some have even sold both! You can haul kids, groceries, pets, or gear without the fuel bills or parking headaches. Some households even call the cargo bike their “first car,” keeping the actual car for long trips and holidays.
